About
Demuch paints a fractured sky in gentle pinks and blues, each geometric shape a different shade, to compliment the golden dome of the courthouse reaching across the upper right half of the composition. Influenced by Cubism’s reduction of forms down to their basic shapes, Demuth pioneered Precisionism, a movement which presented people and objects realistically, in contract to Cubism, but is dedicated to focusing on their geometric shapes. Demuth often incorporated lettering in to his Precisionist paintings in order to flatten the periceved depth of the paintings. He took a special interest in architecture and industry later in his artistic career, and spent a period in the 1920’s creating paintings of his hometown, Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
