About
Not just any still life, this piece was actually created as a memorial to the vaudeville performer Bert Savoy. This was one of several “poster portraits” the Demuth did, symbolically dedicated to an individual, but only decipherable to those with very specific knowledge about the individual. In the case of this poster portrait, Savoy was known in New York City for his comedy acts while dressed as a woman, and died by getting struck by lightning on a Long Island beach. Thus, the shell and blue background allude to the beach, and calla lillies are typically associated with funerals, as well as femininity.
