About
In this painting, Critcher captures a Native American man sitting cross-legged. To his left sit a drum and rattle, and a striped blanket drapes behind him. Painted circa 1930, this work represents the point in Critcher’s career in which she focused on portraits and scenes depicting Native American life in the area of Taos, New Mexico. Like the other members of the Taos Society of Artists, her works aimed to capture the essence of the Native American people through the use of vivid colors.
