About
In February 1897, Pissarro stayed at the Hotel de Russie in Paris on the corner of the Boulevard des Italiens and the Rue Drouot. During this time, he worked on a series of depictions of the Boulevard Montmartre at different times of the day. This painting is the only nighttime scene from the series. Such urban scenes are typical of Pissarro’s late works; Pissarro painted urban scenes in Paris, Rouen, Dieppe, Le Havre, and London, generally from the windows of hotels and apartments.
