About
While this may be a portrait painting, the title “Winter” suggests the historical interpretations of the earlier 18th century and even 17th century works. Morisot may be reflecting on the personification of the winter season as a fashionable woman, as this was a popular subject matter since the 17th century. Morisot’s characteristic impressionistic style heavy and thick brushstrokes further play with textures, atmosphere, and lighting.
