About
Painted later in Morisot’s career, her technique draws figures more defiant of the background rather than blending them into the background, found in earlier works. The domestic scene consists of two women participating in daily routines, Marthe, the red-haired woman begins lifting her skirt, preparing to bathe her feet. Jeanne-Marie, in the background, whose blue hue blends into the deeper blue wall, leans against the bedding, gazing at Marthe, daydreaming. The two models are characteristic of Morisot’s ordinary subject matter, as she paints domestic scenes of women’s lives. The scene is sketched as broad brushstrokes outline each movement and direction of the atmosphere.
