About
Morisot plays with scenes of domestic life by comparing colors and shapes. Being a woman, Morisot wasn’t allowed to access many spaces men were permitted. Thus the subject matter, like The Sisters, focuses more on the domestic life of women. This scene, in particular, shows a delicate, light color pallet, concentrating on light blues, tans, and creams. The two sisters sit upon a floral-patterned couch, each dressed in the same clothing with their dark hair pinned up in the same manner. The girl on the right holds a tan fan, which shape and color complement the picture on the wall. The tan color also compliments the draping fabric off the right edge of the painting. To balance the composition and cut through these neutral tones, Morisot uses a burgundy plant with long thin leaves peaking over the left side of the couch.
