About

The artist uses deep forest greens of the landscape surrounding the woman and children as they hunt for butterflies. The white and black clothing of the woman and children contrast with the natural landscape, causing the figures to stand out against the background. The mark-making of Marisot's brushstrokes blend to create no definite line or shape. Morisot also tends to focus on the deep colors of the landscape by using the chromatic scale of greens with speckles of white and browns, especially with the bare tree on the back right of the painting. On top of this bare tree are the impressions of flowers that come together with a dab of white oil paint that blends into the sky. The model is the artist's sister, with their kids playing in the background around a tree. The model stands in the foreground, holding a butterfly net with her face blurred. This feature causes the viewer to look at the painting holistically as a landscape rather than a figure painting.
