About
This painting captures a moment of domestic life as the woman sits focused on her work, sewing a bit of fabric. Morisot’s brush strokes blend as one color seems to meet another abruptly; they feather out with now definite linear form. The scene is of a bourgeois environment with embroidered fabrics and decorative elements sitting on the table. Her dress blends from emerald green at the bottom to dark blue at the top; her hues feather out into one another seamlessly. The painting captures the essence of her characteristic subject matter, women living in the domestic sphere. Due to not being permitted in the same spaces a man would take up and make subject matter, she is forced to master what she knows well, domestic routines.
