About
The painting takes place in the gardens near Morisot’s family’s summer home in the Bougival suburbs of Paris. Depicted is the young daughter playing with her toy on her father’s lap as he sits on a bench in the garden. Julie, Morisot’s daughter, is shown in a light pink dress, looking down as her sunbonnet is tied with a pale pink ribbon over her golden hair. Her father, Eugène Manet, watches her play as he has his hands in his beige coat. They are placed in a lush green background that is scattered with colorful flowers. Morisot’s hand hurried placing pigment, to capture the fleeting moment’s light and movement.
