About
The expressive and gestural marks of the painting combine color and narrative, characteristic of the Impressionist movement. Morisot uses her daughter as the figurative subject of this painting and captures the innocent, playful nature as she runs vividly through the painted garden. To contrast the child’s baby blue gown, she is painted on green gestural foilage with a scattering of color to suggest roses. The short expressive marks develop a variety of qualities to an impressionistic painting, such as movement and notable light changes. Morisot also takes on domestic subject matter to show it’s beautiful qualities.
