About
In Potter's illustration of Peter Rabbit, the scene tells of the moment little Peter Rabbit returned home, exhausted and sick by his adventures in Mr. McGregor's garden. Peter Rabbit is shown in the background lying on the ground, resting, as his mother looks back at him while she cooks, noticing his missing jacket. Potter's illustration takes up the page like looking through a window, as her watercolor pigment fades softly onto a white background. The pastel browns of the scene are cut by the bit of blue on Mrs. Rabbit's dress and the soft blue of the sky in the background.
