About
Saint Augustine– a founder of the Church– is depicted here receiving the love, acceptance, and passion of Christ as embodied by a floating flame overhead. Murillo depicts Saint Augustine in a kneeling prayer position, with upturned hands to his sides and surrounded by his books, crazier, and miter. The orange fire is encircled by a Latin inscription which translates to, “My heart is restless until it comes to you.” There is a vulnerable humility portrayed in this painting.
