About
Cesare Ripa’s Iconologica, an emblem book contemporary with the artist Gentileschi’s life, provides many personifications of concepts relating to science, philosophy, and the arts. Here Gentileschi depicts the allegory of art in the way Ripa describes, but as a female artist, she is also able to modify this personification slightly to double as a self-portrait. Gentileschi holds a paintbrush up to a canvas in her right hand and clutches the palette in her left.
