This self-portrait was possibly painted by Gentileschi for Grand Duke Cosimo II de'Medici (1590-1621), it is one of only three known self-portraits done by the artist. She was 25 years old at the time, and had just been inducted into the Accademia del Disegno. This Florentine institution was founded in 1563 by Michelangelo and Duke Cosimo de' Medici, and Gentileschi was the woman to be accepted into this illustrious institution.
