About
This scene depicts the biblical tale in which Lot and his family had to flee their burning city. In the moment depicted, they believe that they are the last people left, and the daughters decide that they must make their father drunk and seduce him in order to keep humanity alive. Many painters used this scene as an opportunity to depict the daughters in a seductive manner as corrupters of men, but Gentileschi’s version does not indulge this reading entirely. Gentileschi’s famously rich colors and dramatic composition are clearly evident through this piece.
