Bible “Judith and Holofernes
This painting captures the moment in the biblical tale of Judith and Holofernes in which Judith, with the help of her maid, kills the general Holofernes. In this depiction of the story, she has not yet severed the head, but blood stains the bed cloths and Holofernes pushes his arm up at the woman in resistance. This painting was just one of many biblical paintings by Gentileschi and not her only depiction of this story. In all of her work, she creates a strong light source and rich colors that dramatize the entire scene.”
