About
This still life painting was first exhibited in the 1777 Salon hang. Painted at the height of Vallayer-Coster’s artistic career, it is characteristic of her most notable depictions of flower arrangements. The lighter pastel flowers are brought to the front and contrast against the darker blue tones of the back flowers. Vallayer-Coster likewise included the bright warm tones of red peonies to be highlighted in the frontal arrangement and in the back to further contrast and create new pops of color. The arrangement sits in a terracotta roman style vase upon a skewed table cloth, surrounded by a basket of grapes and organized peaches
