About
An early example of photography, this 1851 cyanotype print did not require the use of a camera. To capture the species of fern on paper, Atkins placed the Pteris Aquilina plant directly onto the sensitized paper and exposed it to sunlight. In this piece, she included three fronds of varying shapes, and in the lower-left corner denoted the species with a handwritten note that says, “Pteris Aquilina.”
