About
This painting exemplifies how Angelica Kauffman uses subtle detail to amplify her portraits. Rather than depicting Isabella Hunter’s gaze as one of lust, as so many of her contemporaries would have, Kauffman portrays Hunter as an innocent and peaceful woman. In the background of the sitter is a passing storm and in Hunter’s hands is a gray pigeon. The two symbols juxtapose Hunter’s serenity and calming nature, and because of such contrast, they further heighten her presence and sense of peace.
