About
Leopold Zborowska, Modigliani’s art dealer and person friend, commissioned Modigliani to create a series of nude paintings in 1917. Zborowska brought in the models, supplied the tools for painting, and let Modigliani use his apartment for the setting of these nude paintings. Modigliani created 22 reclining nudes and 14 seated nudes over the course of the commission. This painting was one such reclining nude. The series of nudes was show in an exhibition at the Berthe Weill Gallery in 1917, however it was temporarily closed on opening night due to explicity sexuality of the paintings, however it was later reopened. Most nude paintings historically featured gods, goddesses, and mythological elements, for Modigliani to forego that entirely in this series was somewhat unprecedented.
