About
The subject of this painting is said to be Marie Feret, a young servant girl from the south of France. Modigliani often painted young workers and students, those without much acclaim, but whose contributions acted as the backbone of their respective communities. The girl’s reserved demeanor and formal work clothes show her role. The girl seems to gently glow, giving her an angelic innocence, heightened by the rosy flush of her cheeks.
