Elena Povolzky (formally Hélène Joséphine Bernier Povolozky) (1882-1979) was a French artist who moved to Paris to pursue her career, and there she became acquinted with artists such Picasso, Soutine, and Modigliani. In 1911 she met and married the Russian gallerist Jacques Povolozky, who owned a space in Saint-Germain. The two were very active in the avant garde art world of Paris at the time, hosting many exhibitions of their work. Modigliani and Elena Povolzky became good friends, and he would frequently be a guest in her home. In return for her generousity Modigliani gave her this portrait.
