About
Hastings was an English writer and poet referred to in Paris as ‘la poétesse anglaise’. She and Modigliani had an extremely passionate and volatile relationship between 1914 and 1916, during which time he would paint 14 portraits of her. Modigliani was an avid lover of poetry and was constantly seen with books in his pocket, so his attraction to Hastings was immediate, though hers took slightly longer to kindle. Hastings wrote under many pens names, and was painted with many faces by Modigliani, whose somewhat abstract style shifted her appearance, but always captured her essence.
