About
Given only a first name, Alice is less anonymous than many of Modigliani's other models who are often not named at all, though little is actually known about her. The adornments on the girl's pale blue dress suggests she has a wealthy family. Alice's hair is painted with a thick application of brown paint, which he then carved into to create the texture, defining the locks of her hair. Many Parisian artists were interested in non-Western styles of art at the time, taking direct inspiration from the shapes used in some African masks, these artists changed the very face of portraiture. Modigliani was part of this group using African art to modernize European portraute by using a long, narrow nose, close-set, almond shapes eyes, and a tiny mouth to depict Alice.
