About
This oil painting on canvas exemplifies Neel’s expressionistic portraits of people she has encountered. This half-length portrait depicts Julie, the subject of the painting, and the young daughter of one of Neel’s neighbors, sitting in a dark cyan dress with a doll in her hands. Julie’s large brown eyes gaze past the viewer and her dark features contrast those of the blonde-haired blue-eyed doll she holds. Executed when Neel resided in Spanish Harlem, this composition communicates an important message about racial division in American communities.
