About
The original full title of this photo is 'A good job in the air cleaner of an army truck, Fort Knox, Ky. This Negro soldier, who serves as truckdriver and mechanic, plays an important part in keeping army transport fleets in operation.'
The mechanic is heroically photographed, which was especially rare at this time. During World War II, the armed forces were not integrated. The Farm Security Agency (FSA) and the Office of War Information (OWI) commissioned many photographers to document the war effort.
