About
This 1989 work is emblematic of Colville’s philosophical interest in existentialism. As the woman lays limp on the thin diving board plank, her arm droops down, mimicking a lifeless corpse. The perspective of the diving board protruding into the frame against the expansive landscape backdrop contributes to the haunting isolation of the image. After witnessing the horrors of World War II during his time in the military, Colville’s post-war work often takes on subtle existentialist and morbid themes.
