About
In his 1962 work Summer, Colville produces a stunning seascape that evokes a sense of awe and loneliness. The lone swimmer braves the open tides of the surrounding ocean, which continues out to the horizon with no other swimmers in sight. Using egg tempera, Colville is able to create the magnificent stillness of a Northern Renaissance masterpiece – the foam in particular on the crest of each wave freezing in motion.
