This nighttime landscape painting, Moon and Cow (1963), is a serene moon-lit snapshot of what appears to be farmland. The striking brightness of the moon gently illuminates the curves of the laying cow as well as the clouds in its surrounding atmosphere, resulting in seductive chiaroscuro. Colville’s attention to detail can be seen across the work, as each aspect of the composition is rendered with extreme precision.
