This dreary landscape painting captures a fleeting moment of a horse rider turning to glimpse a monumental French cross that stands with a border fence alongside the trail. While the woman turns her gaze to the cross, the horse gallops forward heedlessly. The horse’s indifference and the unkempt terrain surrounding the cross contribute to its sense of abandonment or obsolescence. Likely once an important or at least relevant religious monument, its current location appears both unvisited and uninhabited. The abandoned cross serves as a reminder that much like the galloping horse, history continues forward indiscriminately.
