About
Bierstadt’s panoramic painting shows the rocky mountains and green hills of Yosemite Valley. Hanging above the sloping cliffs, the edges of dark gray clouds glow a muted red from the offscreen sun. Bierstadt admired the natural beauty of Yosemite (going so far as to even refer to it as the American “Garden of Eden”) and went on to produce several paintings detailing the grandiose and lush environment.
