About
Created after his trip to the Farallon Islands in 1871, Bierstadt’s image captures the round shiny bodies of sea lions resting all over a soaked and glistening rock formation. On the painting’s left, a bright green and white wave lays suspended, moments away from crashing onto the animals. Below, one sea lion pokes their head out of the ocean waters, a colorful fish resting in their mouth.
