About
Bierstadt’s landscape displays light piercing through the storm clouds in the Sierra Nevada. The sunlight penetrates through the gray, fluffy clouds, and illuminates the top of the snow-covered mountain. In the surrounding landscape, the darkened trees gain a slight glow thanks to the sun. The brightness of the sunshine juxtaposed to the shadowed atmosphere helps to invoke an image of the divine into Bierstadt’s painting.
