About
Following his visit to Yosemite Valley, Bierstadt produced several paintings that reflected the environment’s natural, untouched atmosphere. In this image, Yosemite is shadowed by blackened clouds thanks to a passing storm that occurs overhead. The sky, overtaken by the storm clouds, obscures nearly the entire foreground thanks to the lack of light. However, in the distant backdrop, the sun pushes through the clouds and illuminates the area just enough for the outline of several figures on horseback to become visible.
