Bierstadt’s painting displays figures wading into the ocean and loading a boat on Capri Beach shoreline. The vivid blues and greens of the waves blend, creating a tinted body of water. The shadows cast by the sun reflect off the sandy foreground while boats float on top of the ocean’s surface. Beyond, a cloudy mountain range seemingly rises out of the fog.
