About
Princess Marie Adélaïde, daughter of Louis XV, commissioned this portrait, which became one of Labille-Guiard’s largest and most ambitious work up to that date. It depicts a fictionary composition where Madame Adélaïde has just finished the painted profiles of the late King and Queen, her parents, and that of the late Dauphin. She stands in a luxurious blue-silver and gold embroidered gown with a red overcoat that drapes heavily over the chair behind her as if she just stood up.
