About
Charleston, painted in 1928, is an art deco style painting depicting people sitting in a crowd and watching a jazz band performance. The different spaces are highlight by circles of light which show the interactions between different areas of the painting. This painting was part of a series by Douglas called Magie Noir. It portrayed the short story collections of French writer Paul Morand which discusses the interactions between black and white people in Africa, West Indies, and the U.S. Charleston portrays the story of an American woman raised in Charleston who brutally murders a black saxophone player in France. The three hands on the bottom of the painting and the noose in the center foreshadow danger and racial violence.
