1000 Museums

With a permanent collection bringing together over 3,400 objects of fine and decorative art, the Westmoreland Museum of American Art’s highlights include works by preeminent American artists Mary Cassatt, John Singer Sargent, and Winslow Homer, among others.

Although the strongest representation is in mid-18th to mid-20th century art, a growing collection of post-1950 works, including ones by Donald Judd and Sol LeWitt, is rapidly making the Museum all encompassing in time period. It also boasts an important collection by artists from southwestern Pennsylvania and works featuring the region as the subject matter, often through depictions of either agrarian landscapes or industrial scenes.

Located in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, just outside Pittsburgh, the Museum celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2009, and a transformational renovation and expansion project by Ennead Architects was completed in 2016. Highlights of this include a new cantilevered eastern gallery wing sheathed in zinc. The front of the building is sheathed in floor-to-ceiling glass.
