A Czech painter, Toyen’s pseudonymous name reflected the artist’s rejection of femininity and traditional gender. While studying art in Prague Toyen worked closely with the surrealist Jindřich Štyrský. Together, they moved to Paris and established their own style called Artificialism in response to Surrealism and Abstractionism. Toyen’s art explored gender, sexual politics, and eroticism through the experiences of women. Later works include undertones of violence. Toyen’s artwork was especially political as the artist worked illegally during the Nazi occupation of Prague.
