Tarsila do Amaral

September 1, 1886 - January 17, 1973


Tarsila do Amaral was a Brazilian artist and member of the Grupo dos Cinco, who are considered the five most influential Brazilian modernist artists. She went to Paris to study art and was taught Cubism and other modern styles, but wanted to create a uniquely Brazilian modern style. Sourcing information from local culture, her most famous works blend the European avant-garde with the Brazilian vernacular.
