Sophia Andreyevna Tolstaya (August 22, 1844- November 4, 1919) was a Russian photographer as well as the wife of writer Leo Tolstoy. Tolstaya was born Sophia Behrs to a German physician and his Russian wife. Tolstaya was a translator, diarist, artist, musician, and a businesswoman. In 1887 she began experimenting with photography and took over 1,000 photographs in her lifetime.
