A second generation Hudson River School landscape artist, Robert S. Duncanson was one of the earliest African American artists to gain prominence. Duncanson was known for his abolitionist political views, which often appeared, metaphorically, in his landscape paintings. Many of his paintings portray peaceful vistas and serene views, depicting hope in a conflicting time in America\’s history.
