Robert Delaunay is a French artist known for his multiverse style influenced by artists across Europe. Born in Paris in 1885, he apprenticed under a theatrical designer in 1902 and immediately started his painting career a year later. By 1904 he was exhibiting his work at the Salon d’Automne and, from 1904 until WWI, at the Salon des Independants. While in Paris, he befriended other artists such as Henri Rousseau and Jean Metzinger. Their color theories and neo-impressionist style significantly impacted Delaunay’s artistic style. He also became inspired by the Cubists after serving in the military in Laon. His wife, Sonia Terk, whom he married in 1910 and collaborated with on many projects, was another significant inspiration for Delaunay.
