Cézanne was one of the most important modern European artists, whose style, while considered as being Post-Impressionist, laid the groundwork for the 20th century experimentation of artists such as Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse.
Camille Pissarro encouraged him to paint out of doors, innovations in artist materials had recently made this possible. The change lightened up his palette and he incorporated natural landscapes with imaginary figures. When his work started to be promoted by the influential gallerist Ambroise Vollard in 1895, he became more widely known. Artist Mary Cassatt, with her strong ties to American collectors, was another promoter of Cézanne\’s art, and his work is well-represented in the United States.
