Mary Gartside was an English watercolorist and color theorist. She wrote books and essays about mixing colors and the use of light and shadow in her paintings. She observed the changes of color in nature and by using watercolors, was able to create cloud-like images that played with the many colorful hues that ranged from light to dark. She was the only known woman to have published theory on color up until the twentieth century.
