Maruyama Ōkyo is considered one of the great Edo period artists and teachers of 18th century Japan. He was the founder of the Maruyama school of painting and incorporated elements of Chinese, Japanese, and Western art into his work which was known for its extreme unsentimental realism. Many of his works are considered National Treasures and very few are owned outside of Japan.
