Maria Schalcken
""
(1645 – 1699)
Maria Schalken was a Dutch artist most likely born between 1645 and 1650 in Made, much like her brother, Godfried Schalken, little is known about her other than that she was a pupil of and took after her brother, painting in the style of Dutch genre work. The two paintings which are attributed to Schalken, a self-portrait and Boy Offering Grapes to a Woman, both capture the style of the subject matter of Dutch genre paintings: polished and detailed depictions of everyday life. In 1682, Maria Schalken married her husband, a Dordrecht merchant, and appears to have refocused away from painting.
