Lucas Cranach the Elder
German Renaissance artist Lucas Cranach the Elder is known for his portraits, some done while he was court painter to the Electors of Saxony. He also was an engraver and printmaker. He was friends with both Martin Luther, at the dawn of the Protestant movement, and the Catholic princes who he painted.
His father was an artist, and both of his sons, Hans Cranach and Lucas Cranach the Younger, became artists.
