Leonora Carrington

April 6, 1917 - May 25, 2011

Although she was born and educated in England, Leonora Carrington spent most of her adult life and career in Mexico. Her Surrealist works interacted with the dream world, and she incorporated imagery from the animal kingdom and mythology in her art as well as autobiographical elements. She was a founding member of the Women’s Liberation Movement in Mexico in the 1970s, which advocated for radical feminism and contemporary philosophy. She believed that the personal psychic freedom she sought through her Surrealist art could only be accomplished once greater political freedom was achieved.
